02. Housing

Location Croix-Rousse. Lyon. France
Status Academic work
Year 2008

The "Croix-Roussien" context asks an interesting question, the one of the theatricality. Croix-Rousse can be read as the myth of the neighborhood village. Life there seems to be different. More local, more trade, more open-minded ... It’s may be only impression but we can clearly feel that the atmosphere is unique there. This mythical link to the old popular district could be, even stronger in the next few years since the socio-economic conditions will be improved whereas the value system will not. This issue was particularly interesting since it’s one of the credos of the "bourgeois-bohème" who appreciate a lot the "croix-roussienne" atmosphere. The neighborhood allows them to do all they are linving to.

The idea is to give to each housing a maximum of space to express themselves and take over the district. It’s also important to make a difference between what belongs to the intimate and to the public. The common living spaces are directly put in relation to the street while the other spaces take place in various concrete block that structure and give a rhythm to the building. Those living space, in length, become finally crossed, that is to say they own at each end a bay window giving to them a double projection in both the street and within the building. It also allows very good ventilation by convection.

P. Zumthor, in Thinking architecture said: « Wherever it is, there is a rear and a front, a left and a right, a close and a distance, an inside and an outside, there are forms of focus, concentration or treatment of the landscape » which basically is what that building want to reach.
