23. QNDMC

#02 ARTISANAT

Status Architectural review
Year 2013

QNDMC, « Qui ne dit mot consent » is a french motto translated from latin, meaning « Silence is consenting ».

Questioning the notion of crafts, is understand the evolution of the architectural practice, and the becoming of a profession we embody. The generalization of a decontextualized architectural model and of industrialized building generated by the modernist thinking to meet the ambitions of its own time is now challenged by new socio-economic paradigms. Even if our training leads us to consider this question through the eyes of the architect, the subject of craftsmanship is also a question in itself. In a more general way, related to a production, it is defined by a Know-How, materials, a quality and an identity. A key-element influencing the contemporary dynamics of globalization, craftsmanship is also a matter of society, preserving at its scale many cultural and technical specificities. Some contemporary architects made their practice from this attitude, favoring an approach led by materiality and the traditional forms of place. Based in India, the Studio Mumbai develops, tests and builds an architecture in a direct collaboration with a local and qualified craftsmanship. The renewed interest in Critical Regionalism in many european countries is also noticeable : craft is then asserted as a tool supporting the identity of peoples, a tool used by many new architectural practices, and supported by national politics.
